One hundred thousand cataract operations in western Kenya

The Lake Region Eye Trust has completed its 100,000th operation funded by the Foundation since the partnership began in 2009.

The Lake Region Eye Trust in Kisumu has completed its 100,000th cataract operation funded by the Foundation, seventeen years after the partnership began in 2009.

The Trust runs a hospital in Kisumu and outreach camps across western Kenya, including Siaya and Homa Bay counties. So far this year its follow-up rate is 74%, above the programme average, and 80.2% of patients followed up have had a good outcome. The Foundation renewed its grant in April 2025 for five years, to fund 24,000 more operations.

The Trust estimates that about three in four people in western Kenya who need the operation have not yet had it. The renewed grant will pay for camps in two sub-counties it has not reached before.

The Trust also runs one of the Foundation’s fourteen implant aftercare clinics.
