How to apply
Most calls have two stages: a short outline, and for those invited, a full proposal. You can apply in English or Japanese. It takes us about a week to reply to a question.
Who can apply
- Registered charities, non-profit organisations and community groups with a bank account in the organisation’s name.
- Public hospitals and clinics, and private hospitals for work with patients who cannot pay.
- Universities and public research institutes, for research calls.
- Individuals, only for the Kiroshi Fellowships.
You do not need to have had a grant from us before, and most of the organisations we fund each year are new to us. Small organisations are welcome: the outline stage asks for nothing a group of volunteers could not write in an afternoon.
The two stages
Outline
Two pages: what you want to do, for whom, roughly what it costs and how you will know it worked. Send it to grants@kiroshi.org with the call’s name in the subject line, before the closing date. We confirm receipt within two working days.
Eligibility check
Within ten working days we tell you whether your outline is eligible, and if it is not, why.
Full proposal
About one in three outlines are invited to send a full proposal, usually within six weeks. We send a template, and a named grants officer you can call or write to with questions. For applications over ¥30 million we may visit.
Panel and decision
The assessment panel meets once per call. We tell you the decision within ten weeks of the closing date, with the panel’s comments, whether or not you are funded.
Agreement and payment
Funded applicants sign a grant agreement based on our grant conditions. We pay in advance, in yen or local currency, every six or twelve months.
What makes a strong application
- A clear account of who you will reach and how you know they need it.
- An outcome you will measure, defined the way we define ours, with a realistic target.
- A plan for follow-up: what happens to people after the screening, the operation or the training.
- Honest costs, including staff, transport and the boring parts. We would rather fund the real cost than an optimistic one.
- What happens when the grant ends.
- Any connection to Kiroshi Opticals or another implant maker, declared at the start.
