Conditions

Grant conditions

These are the standard conditions in every grant agreement, in plain English. The agreement you sign is the binding version, and a call may add conditions of its own, which it will say before you apply. Version 7, in force from 1 April 2025.

Conditions
  1. Payments

We pay in advance, every six or twelve months, against an agreed budget. You may move up to 15% between budget lines without asking us. Unspent money at the end of the grant is returned unless we agree otherwise, and we usually do if it will be spent on the same purpose.

  2. Reporting

A short report every twelve months and a final report within three months of the end of the grant: what you did, what changed, what went wrong, and the outcome you agreed to measure. We read every report and reply to it. We would much rather hear about a problem early than late.

  3. Outcomes

Clinical partners report outcomes using our definitions, so that results can be compared across hospitals and years, and allow our programme quality team to visit without notice and re-measure a sample of patients.

  4. Open access

Research we fund is published open access, with its data where this is safe and lawful. Standards, documentation and software produced with our money are released under open licences. We pay the costs.

  5. Safeguarding

You must have a safeguarding policy suited to the people you work with, and report any concern about harm to a child or vulnerable adult connected with the grant to us within 48 hours. Our safeguarding page sets out what we expect.

  6. Data

Personal data collected through the grant belongs to the people it describes. You may not sell it or share it with any implant maker, including Kiroshi Opticals, except anonymised summaries for safety reporting, or with the person’s explicit consent.

  7. Devices

Where a grant pays for devices or implants, you choose the supplier. Nothing in a grant agreement requires or rewards the use of Kiroshi Opticals products.

  8. Conflicts

You must tell us about any connection between your organisation and an implant maker, or between your staff and ours, at the start and whenever it changes.

  9. Acknowledgement

You may say that the work is funded by the Kiroshi Foundation. You may not use our logo to imply that we endorse a product, and you need not mention us at all if doing so would put people at risk.

  10. When things go wrong

If a grant cannot be delivered as agreed, tell us and we will work out a change with you. We end grants early only for fraud, serious safeguarding failures or persistent refusal to report, and we have done so eleven times in ten years.
